This summer, Omiš is bringing back another event that celebrates the stories, traditions and unforgettable moments that make Dalmatian summers so special. After more than 15 years away, Crazy dives are returning to the program - one of the most unique and legendary events that was part of Omiš summers for decades.
As part of the Omiš Summer Frei program, on Saturday, August 1st at 8:30 PM, the newly opened pier at Omiš City Port will become the ultimate gathering spot for daring divers, a cheerful crowd, and an atmosphere to remember.
A Story Over 70 Years in the Making
Did you know that the story of the pier and these crazy dives dates all the way back to 1951?
It all started completely by accident. After a local water polo match, players began diving into the sea in the most bizarre ways just to amuse the crowd. The spectators loved it so much that for days afterward, everyone was talking about the dives rather than the game!
Since then, these seaside antics became a true trademark of Omiš. Generations of locals came up with their own acrobatic styles, giving them legendary names like the "wounded bird", the "pancake dive", and "Tarzan in retirement".
When a dive becomes a spectacle
When it comes to Crazy dives, technical perfection isn't the goal. It’s all about courage, creativity, and that extra spark that makes a dive unforgettable.
Each competitor gives their custom dive a hilarious, unique name, promising a show packed with hilarious aerial acrobatics and pure entertainment.
Competitors will execute two dives each, with the top performers advancing to the finals for the ultimate showdown. A three-member jury of local legends connected to the event’s history will judge the best performances. The night will be fueled by DJ music, stage lighting, and hosted by well-known TV presenter Mirta Šurjak.
As fitting for the town of pirates, the grand finale will have a true pirate touch. For the award ceremony, local Omiš pirates will sail up to the pier on two traditional gajeta (traditional Dalmatian fishing boat) boats, complete with red flares and sounds of flintlock pistols. The winner of the night can look forward to a truly traditional prize, an authentic Dalmatian prosciutto.
Once the champion claims their prize, the party moves straight from the pier to the heart of the old town at Poljica Square for a live concert by Sandi Cenov!
