Throughout a long part of its history, Omiš was well known as a pirate town. Relying on their maritime tradition, the pirates of Omiš were a source of fear in their waters, and even in many remote areas of the Adriatic Sea. They largely owe their fame to their quick boats known as SAGITTAE (locally strile, meaning arrows).
